What Is A NZ Permanent Resident Visa?

A permanent resident visa is one of the ways that an individual can attain legal status in another country. The best thing about this type of visa is that you don't have to worry about being able to travel home, but it does also require a lot of paperwork for each application. 

If you are a foreigner who has been living and working in New Zealand for at least five years, you may be eligible for a New Zealand permanent resident Visa (PRV). This visa entitles you to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. To be eligible for an NZ PRV, you must:

  • Be a permanent resident of a country other than New Zealand 
  • Have been living in New Zealand for at least five years, and have been regularly residing in the country during that time;
  • Have no criminal convictions that would make you ineligible to live or work in New Zealand; and
  • Meet all other eligibility requirements, including having a valid passport and proof of financial stability.

If you are currently living in New Zealand on a temporary visa, such as a student visa, your situation is different. You will not be eligible for an NZ PRV if your visa expires while you are waiting to apply for an NZ PRV.
