The petitioner (the person filing the petition) must provide proof of death and identity of the decedent. The court will also require information about the decedent's assets and liabilities. The petitioner will need to list all assets and liabilities in an inventory.
The court will then hold an Inventories Hearing to determine whether any assets should be distributed to the decedent's heirs. At this hearing, witnesses can testify about what items were owned by the decedent at the time of his or her death. If there are no heirs, or if there are only minor heirs, then the estate may be distributed according to state law.
If there are more significant heirs, then they may have to file claims against the estate before it can be finalized administratively. Once all claims have been filed and adjudicated, finalize administration of the estate proceedings and prepare a final judgment stating who owns what property.
